At the November 15 meeting, the oath of office was administered to Perrysburg Township Police Chief Matt Gazarek and Deputy Chief Dave Nixon. Top, Trustee Gary Britten swears in Chief Gazarek. Above is the chief with his family.
Following his ceremony, Chief Gazarek administered the oath of office to Deputy Chief Nixon, at right. After taking the oath, both had new badges pinned on their uniforms by their spouses.
On November 1, the trustees promoted Lieutenant Dave Nixon to deputy chief. Deputy Chief Nixon has been with the township since August 2007 when he was hired as a road patrol officer. He was promoted to lieutenant in 2015. The deputy chief is expected to retire next summer, but will remain to help with training of new lieutenants to replace himself and to assist Chief Gazarek with hiring as needed.
Chief Gazarek was tapped as the new police chief in October. He had been serving as interim chief following the retirement of Mark Hetrick in mid-August.
The chief began work as a road patrol officer in April 2002, was promoted to sergeant, and in 2017 was promoted to lieutenant.
